Neighbors in Action: School and Residents Rally to Support Families

When families at McMeen Elementary began facing increasing challenges—from food insecurity to rising housing costs—the school stepped up.
In response to growing need within its community, McMeen launched the McMeen Food Market, a weekly, school-based resource designed to ensure that students and their families have reliable access to food and basic necessities. What began as a targeted effort to support the most vulnerable has quickly become a vital lifeline for many.
The need is real. McMeen serves approximately 720 students from Pre-K through 5th grade. As a Title I school, more than 70% of students come from low-income households. McMeen reflects the diversity of its neighborhood, with families representing more than 20 countries. Many families live in nearby apartment communities, often sharing housing to manage rising costs. Some are immigrants who entered the United States through legal pathways but have since encountered barriers to employment and transportation due to changes in Temporary Protected Status policies. These challenges have real consequences. Some students arrive at school hungry, without adequate clothing for the weather, and carrying the stress of economic uncertainty.
Rather than allowing these challenges to hinder student success, McMeen has taken meaningful action—creating a system of support that meets families where they are and helps ensure students can focus on learning.

That leadership has inspired action beyond the school walls. Volunteers from the surrounding community have stepped up to support the McMeen Food Market and ensure kids aren't going home hungry. Each week, community members give their time to organize and distribute food and clothing while connecting with families.
As one volunteer shared, “This experience is the highlight of my week,” while another reflected, “Before working at the McMeen Food Market, I had no idea the level of need within our own community.”
There are several ways to get involved:
Volunteer at the McMeen Food Market (Tuesdays, 1:00–3:00 PM)
Donate new or gently used children’s clothing
Support TeamUpColorado, a local nonprofit providing emergency assistance to families
Volunteers and community also play a key role in two of McMeen's signature annual events—a Backpack Giveaway in partnership with the Denver Police Department each August, and a vibrant Multicultural Night celebrating students' cultures through food, music, and fashion in May.
McMeen Elementary, a cornerstone of the neighborhood since 1960, continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of its students.
