Cozy Dome. We-Saw Seesaw. We-Go-Round. These fun, sing-songy words encompass the playful, togetherness vibe of Cook Park’s soon-to-be renovated playground. The guiding word for the project: inclusivity.
“This playground has been designed for all ages and abilities,” said Brittany White, PLA, Project Manager for City and County of Denver Parks and Recreation. “Children with varying ages and abilities will be able to access a majority of the playground elements.”
Cook Park’s update delivers on that mission. The Cozy Dome provides a quiet space for little ones with sensory sensitivities while the artificial turf mound and sensory wall are accessible to almost all children. Along with a traditional tube slide, the Cook Park will also offer a roller slide.
In addition to the playground renovation, the asphalt walkway just west of the recreation center parking lot will be replaced with concrete. Denver Parks and Recreation partnered with DOTI, (Department of Transportation and Infrastructure) to increase the funding for walk replacements throughout the park, which will include a new walk connection along East Mexico Avenue between Magnolia and East Colorado.
Construction will begin in the second half of 2022 and is estimated to take approximately one year to complete. The playground and impacted walkways will be closed during construction.
“There will be breaks in circulation while the walks are being replaced. Park users can walk on the grass, but not on the path itself, while it’s under construction” said White.
This project is part of the Elevate Denver Bond. Part of the bond, passed by voters in 2020, aims to revitalize Denver parks, playgrounds, and recreation centers.
“The people of Denver voted to spend money in our parks and that’s why this is happening, showing the community we are putting their hard-earned dollars to work in the ways they have identified,” said White.
